Setonian editors endorse Hoffman, Kane
After hearing platform proposals from both of the Student Government Association 2014-2015 Presidential candidates, The Setonian editorial board will endorse the Hoff- man/Kane ticket for the election.
While both Tim Hoffman and Ashley Jefferson, current SGA members, brought forward elaborate, thoughtful platforms, Hoffman’s dedication to teamwork and a relationship be- tween Seton Hall and South Orange Village seemed more relevant to the University community.
Hoffman has two years’ experience serving on a local board of education.
He stated that his goal as SGA president would be to bring people together and serve others, focusing on the University’s mission of servant leadership.
Hoffman proposed security improvements such as added street lights along Ward Avenue, a discussion that his vice presidential runningmate Ryan Kane had with President Esteban.
We were especially impressed by Hoffman’s dedication to meetings and conversations with South Orange Village President Alex Torpey.
The Hoffman/Kane ticket is proposing a strengthened relationship between Seton Hall and South Orange to make more of a “college town” feel and environment.
The pair seems to have hit the ground running on this initiative, one that is important and would improve student morale.
The second point that Hoffman made that impressed our editorial board was to increase the SGA’s bud- get for clubs and organizations.
Right now the budget remains $159,000 for a total of clubs and organizations that is quickly exceeding 150.
Hoffman promised to revise the SGA bylaws within the first week of the 2014-2015 session if elected president. Kane worked on SGA’s smoking ban initiative and according to Hoffman will continue pursuing this issue.
We trust that they can accomplish this and more.
If Hoffman is elected, we expect committees that will hear everyone’s concerns in a public forum.
As always, we wish the best of luck to both candidates.
(One of our editorial board members abstained from the vote as he is in the same fraternity as Ryan Kane.)
