Justin Timberlake doesn’t disappoint fans with recent album, ‘The 20/20 Experience’

After a nearly 7-year-break from music, Justin Timberlake is back with his new album “The 20/20 Experience,” which was released on March 19 and produced by the well-known Timbaland. Now a seasoned actor and married man, Timberlake has come a long way from his boy-band roots.

Timberlake is known for crooning falsettos and catchy dance tunes, and his latest music effort does not disappoint. While the classic pop-vibe is obviously present on the album, he mixes in jazz, blues, rhythm and blues, tribal and Latin influences to make the compilation unique and interesting.

Timberlake shows off his rap skills in the album’s eight-minute opener, “Pusher Love Girl.” Tribal drums can be heard in “Don’t Hold the Wall” and Latin flavor sweeps through “Let the Groove Get In” with eerie similarities to Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’.”

“Suit & Tie,” the first single off the album, received mixed reviews from fans and critics. But, no matter the initial reaction, it’s safe to say that most people know the words and can’t help but get up and dance while listening. “Mirrors,” the second song released off “The 20/20 Experience,” is an emotional tribute to his grandparents’ 68- year relationship that ended when his grandfather passed away last year. Yes, the song does feel like it could have been released on Timberlake’s last album, “FutureSex/ LoveSounds,” but there is something about its rawness that gives you chills while listening.

Timberlake also pays homage to his recent marriage to Jessica Biel in “That Girl” singing, “I’m in love with that girl, and she told me that she’s in love with me.” He also goes on to add, “I don’t pay attention to the talk,” which is presumed to reference his experience being under constant tabloid speculation.

Despite his long break from music, Billboard.com predicts that Timberlake’s album will sell about 800,000 units in its first week. The last artist to sell over 750,000 albums in its first week was Taylor Swift with her “Red” album released Oct. 22, 2012. While “The 20/20 Experience” holds 10 songs, Timberlake confirmed to reporters that a second part to the album will be released later this year.

Overall, both die-hard Timberlake fans and those simply passing by will be pleased with this musical comeback.

The Setonian gives this album 4.5 out of 5 stars.
