Women’s golf wraps up season
The women’s golf team wrapped up its fall season with a second-place finish at the Lehigh University Invitational, falling one stroke short of champion Princeton.
The Pirates finished with a 27-over-par, 604, including a 299 second round, which tied for the best round in program history.
Junior Hannah Basalone, who won this tournament last year, returned to shoot a 1-under-par 71, in the second round to help lead the Pirates.
Head coach Sara Doell said seeing Basalone return to form after a hand injury affected her swing the past few tournaments, was the highlight of the weekend.
“We had (Basalone) back, it was awesome,” Doell said. “I was really proud of her. I know she was disappointed. We didn’t say a word to her about how she won at Lehigh last year. She’s had a tough fall with the injuries. She looked confident. You could tell she was back in her stride.”
With the second-place finish, the Pirates wrap up their most successful season in their three-year existence, including the program’s second tournament win, three-second place finishes by one stroke and one tied for fourth.
“I feel like we were consistent across the board,” Doell said. “I was happy with how we played. I’d say they’re all just important.”
The team reached its four scoring goals it set entering the fall season, which Doell said she was “excited” about.
Looking ahead, Doell said being competitive in the Big East is one of the team’s main goals entering spring season.
“I believe we can compete with all the teams in the Big East,” Doell said. “Certainly Notre Dame has separated themselves from the rest of the pack. I think we can beat any team on any given day.”
As for the team’s aspirations, Doell said the team will be meeting to set goals for the spring season.
“I certainly believe we can continue to improve our ranking,” Doell said. “I want to see us finish strong at Big East.”
The Pirates are ranked No. 93 nationally in the Golfstat Relative Ranking as of Wednesday.
