Volleyball sweeps Saint Peter’s
The volleyball team swept Saint Peter’s College on Tuesday (25-11, 25-14, 25-12) to close out their six-game home stand.
Head coach Allison Yaeger said she was pleased with the way her team played during their time at home.
“It was wonderful to be back home,” Yaeger said. “We were on the road for so long and playing in front of the home crowd really just helps so much.”
The Pirates (14-1, 2-0 Big East) put in a dominant performance over the Peacocks (1-16), on the strength of sophomore Simona Sekulova’s 13 kills and junior Kelly Palma’s six aces.
Sophomores Shelbey and Stacey Manthorpe did not play in the match.
Yaeger said they didn’t know much about Saint Peter’s coming into the match.
“We didn’t really have film on them,” Yaeger said. “So we had to go by their stats and win-loss record.”
Seton Hall controlled all of the first set, never falling behind on the scoreboard. They jumped out to an early lead and closed out the set 25- 11 on the strength of four Palma aces. The biggest story of the first set was an ankle injury suffered by freshman Amanda Hansen.
Coach Yaeger said that she will be able to find out more about the injury on Wednesday.
“I don’t think it’s too serious,” Yaeger said. “She should be playing by the weekend.”
In the second set, Sekulova’s eighth kill put the Pirates out to an early 14-6 lead. Sekulova slammed seven kills in the set and Seton Hall won 25-14. Saint Peter’s was able to keep it close in the beginning of the third set but the Pirates started to pull away after a big kill by senior Morgan DeVries made the score 11-7. The Pirates finished off the set, 25-12.
Seton Hall will return to conference play on Friday with a match at Georgetown at 7p.m.on Friday. The remainder of the Pirates schedule will be made up of Big East match-ups.
Coach Yaeger said she feels her team is ready for Big East play if they continue to play with the same intensity.
“This is going to be real tough for us,” Yaeger said. “The Big East is a very good conference, especially the teams we have to face this weekend.”
