Volleyball snaps losing streak

Shelbey Manthorpe gets her third triple-double of the season to lead the volleyball team to victory over Villanova.

Manthorpe had 12 kills, 41 assists, and 23 digs to lead the Pirates to a 3-2 victory over the Wildcats, 25-19, 25-22, 16-25, 18-25, 15-9.

The Pirates started off sluggish in the first set, going down 8-3 after a 5-0 Villanova run. Seton Hall would come back with a 7-4 run to bring the game back within two, forcing Villanova to call a timeout.

Following the timeout, Seton Hall continued their good playing with a 5-1 run to take the lead 19-17 and force Villanova to call their second timeout. They would cap off the set with a 6-2 run to win the set.

The second set would go in the same fashion, with Villanova getting out to an early lead with an 8-2 run. Immediately following that, Seton Hall would go on a 7-1 run of their own to tie the score at 9.

The set went back and forth following that, with no team being albe to gain the momentum.

This would change when Seton Hall went on a 3-0 run to take a 16-13 lead and force a Villanova timeout. Following the timeout, the Wildcats would regain some momentum, tying the score at 19.

Seton Hall would then go on a 4-1 run to take a 23-20 lead, forcing another Villanova timeout. Following the timeout, the teams traded points, with Seton Hall winning the set 25-22.

Villanova again jumped out to an early lead to begin set three, starting the set with a 5-2 run. The Wildcats would then go on a 3-0 run to force a Pirate timeout with the Wildcats leading 14-9.

Following the timeout, the Wildcats continued their dominance, scoring four more straight points before allowing a Seton Hall score. Villanova would continue their dominance of the set, eventually winning 25-16.

Once again Villanova jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set, going on a 6-2 run following a series of trading points, taking a 9-5 lead. Following the run, each team traded runs while keeping Villanova's four point lead primarily intact.

Villanova would take control of the set with a 3-0 run to pull ahead 21-15. They would then finish off the set with another 3-0 run.

In the fifth and final set, the Pirates finally came out of the gate strong, going ahead 5-2 following a 5-1 run. Following a Villanova timeout, Seton Hall would go on another run, extending their lead to 5. Seton Hall would eventually win the set 15-9 to win the match.

Head Coach Kris Zeiter said the key to the way the game went was consistency. "In the first two games we were the most consistent and the third and fourth game they were more consistent," he said.

Manthorpe says she is just trying to help the team win. "I'm just trying to help out my team in any way I can, so if a triple-double helps then it helps," she said.

She also gave credit to her teammates for helping her progress as a player. "I think the girls have really helped me to improve and just encourage me throughout the whole season, so I think that's one way I'm getting better," she said.

The team goes on the road this week, facing Notre Dame on Saturday and DePaul on Sunday.
